Here's another Lincoln that I just purchased. It's full red with great luster. The mark above the E in ONE will affect the grade, I'm afraid.

Another nice one from Paul..
Looks like it may have been a staple mark?

I would be more concerned with the soft strike on obverse. however that's not suppose to effect
the grade; unless I was the grader. still nice coin !!

LDS obverse, looks like it has killer luster.

MS-64, maybe 65 with a TPG if it has the luster.

Is the worn bust the result of branch mints using dies past their prime? I've read about that in a couple of places.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't think it would quite make MS-65 with the reverse mark.

Weak obverse strike and the hit on the reverse will keep this one at 64RD imo

The bust is not worn, the die used to strike it was.

Yes, the branch mints started improving around 1927/28 as I recall. Things were better but they still had their problems getting working dies from Philly so they over-used them as necessary to meet production quotas.

For us collectors it's our advantage. Late state dies tend to produce highly lustrous coins....like I'm guessing this one is.

Great luster but with that gouge it'd be lucky to keep the 64 the rest of it deserves.

I agree with 64 Red. Hit on the reverse doesn't look like an offending staple though. I hate when dealers use those stupid cardboard 2x2s. Staples are not your friend.

The reverse mark looks like a bag mark and not a staple.
