Looks like machine damage on the coin. Note how the tops of the date have the same markings going on. The dies moved during the strike. The 1968-1972 cents suffered a lot of this those years.

I think that I see a split serif on the lower left of the MM. If it is - maybe I learned something here - that you have to look at other devices, too. If they show MD then that is what is most likely on the MM. It means that MD can produce a split serif too! Is this a correct way of interpreting what we are seeing?

Usually if there is a split on the lower serif, then it is caused by either coin contact with a well placed hit, damaged punch or it is a RPM. On the example above I noticed the upper part that matched the tops of the devices. Because if you have a the same doubling direction on the date and mint mark, it is machine damaged. The split on the lower serif is so small that if it was a RPM, it would probably not be listed. But usually Machine Doubling does not create a split/notching in devices. I've only seen a very few times where that happened.
