Wonder how many the RCM started with? I checked when it first came out and the most I could add to a cart was under 500. I can still add over 100 to the cart....I think the mint is on to us checking inventory via the shopping cart. I suspect most of these coins (that is, more than half) went to whoever commissioned them and other dealers. Still, I like the series and did order it. BTW, Silvertowne sell it for 89.95USD w/ free shipping. http://www.silvertowne.com/p-24948-...-in-ogp.aspxTheir system allows me to order over 2000 units so I would guess they got a large allocation (and likely commissioned the coins).

I was on the fence with this series. I like it a lot but didn't want to spend that much money. I'mglad that silvertowne has it. They usually put items like that on sale later on when they don't all sell :)

The set will sell out and if people are patient, will be able to pick a set up by more than one means. Maybe for less than issue price.

I love the coin (and future coins) and I am also an avid fisherman so this set was a no brainer for me. Low mintage, edge lettering and a nice display box all sealed the deal. I was just thinking why didnt they do this set sooner and I kinda wish the fish were coloured too.

Eh I will pass, I still have a bad taste in my month from the Great Lake sub ... while the 6500 mintage and edge lettering is an improvement I am still not convinced.

Quote: Eh I will pass, I still have a bad taste in my month from the Great Lake sub ... while the 6500 mintage and edge lettering is an improvement I am still not convinced. What is wrong with the Lakes sub, Northerncoins? The fact that the individual coins can be picked up less then issue price? But the same happens with almost all coins since 2013. Do not forget, that these (animal 4-coin series) running already for 2 years, and nothing changes. Previous coins still available. It is the meter of subject: Fishermen will pick the "Fish" series and hunter - the "Deer". The difference with the "Fish" - RCM made a smart step: lowered mintage and finally presented them as subscription with very nice box (basically you have it with the "Lakes" sub). And in addition - totally new technology of transparent enameling with different depths on the Lakes coins is unique vs edge lettering. Nothing to regret here....just buy "yours" and also limit yourself.

Always buyers remorse when you see the coin for sale at less than issue price. Lakes coins are unique, and I like the set, but the bad taste comes when I pay $115 per coin and see them for sale for $89.95 later from private sellers. Have to remove the doubt of the purchase from your mind in the fact that the set is desirable by you, do not worry about overall popularity. People feel good when they are part of a winning team. Higher than list price in aftermarket makes one think that you have made a good purchase decision. Like Ladybug Glass, if you have it you feel good that you are a smart coin buyer. Georgina Pope coin, not so much. If you like fish, buy fish coins, don't worry what others think or pay.

Actually I don't agree with offering singles to Subs, a Subscription should be just that , only available as a Sub not extra singles, it just muddys the waters as far as mintages for the sub is concerned.
I like the Great lake Sub but with all the singles floating around it devalues it. I know some don't agree and thats fine , its just my point of view.

I agree with your point, Northerncoins, but: "Subscription" not equal to "set". Subscription, is always singles, in ideal, when you subscribe, you assure to yourself, that: 1. you will receive all the coins in the subscription 2. Instead of separate cases you'll get the single case for all the coins. RCM misses here the point, that "free case" have to in addition to the single cases, and better be shipped with the last coin. But your assumption correct to the "set". In order to be unique, the coins in the set shouldn't be distributed as singles, and the set have to include single Certificate for all the coins. The fact, that RCM mixes subscription sales model with the set - it just allows to them to sell more.

There are no 'free cases'. When we buy subscriptions the Mint deletes the clamshells and beauty boxes and replaces them with one larger case.
In order for the case to truly be 'free', we should expect to receive the individual coins packaged as they are when sold separately. This is becoming more of an issue for me as the Mint produces beauty boxes with significant graphics and appeal. For example, the largemouth coin actually comes with a nice looking box but I suspect that I won't get it because I subscribed to the series.
They also save on shipping the coins. I have received $100+ subscription coins in a bubble envelope left in my mail box. Of course, they do pay a bit more to ship the larger box but only once. It's debatable, but I suspect that the Mint's overall cost to fulfill a subscription with a 'free case' is less than if they sold the same coins individually.

SilverDon So what if a coin is selling less than issue - if you like the coin design, theme - why feel less confident about the purchase just becuz private sellers unloading at a less than issue price- I get the thrill of getting a coin that shoots up in value versus decline but if it goes up and you really prize the coin you will not be flipping it - so no need to fret about a coin you love if that is the key factor in you selecting the coins you do... Case in point - re Great Lakes / I sense you very much like these coins .... You like the design theme but you become cool to buying or regret buying such coins only because some private seller is selling for 25 dollars less than issue price... You like the coin - that's all that should play in your head... It's not a poor choice simply becuz a private seller discounted the price...UNLESS flipping for profit is your key factor.

In the case of the Lakes set, one could have and should have bought the sub until the box arrived. Then cancelled the sub and filled it with coins purchased individually, in hindsight. I like the artwork on the outer sleeve as well and feel that the subscriber should get the advantage of having those and a clamshell. The mint is reacting to people subscribing and cancelling after receiving the box by issuing the box at the end of the set. I agree only sets should be sold but that hamstrings the seller, and Silveroid who wants only one or two of the 5 Cent 1 ounce series would miss out on some of that which he likes. Hard to make everyone happy.
