My coin book shows Confederation of Canada coins from 1858 and 1859. I suspect they are Province coins from Canada, which split into Quebec and Ontario, but would like to be certain. It is the only way I can see how a coin mined before the Confederation of Canada could bear Canada on it.

Yes, they are Provincial coins. In 1858, there were cents, 5's, 10's, & 20's. In '59, only the Cents.

It's not really in the wrong place in the book. They were the first coins authorized by England to be "Canadian". Before that, it was only bank and merchant tokens and foreign coinage.

Oakie is right.
Perhaps it would be more convenient to have these listed in the respective denomination sections.
a huge lot more convenient,
who would care about it NOT being politically correct?.

The Provincial issues are just like those of New Brunswick , Nova Scotia , PEI, The BC gold issues and Newfoundland coins as well as the sovereigns with C mint marks. They are NOT part of the Canadian series. Many people collect them that way, but technically they are colonial issues, or in the case of the sovereigns ,British coins minted in another country. The Canadian series as such is (Dominion Issues) 1870 to the current date. The Province of Canada was formed in 1841 as a result of the ACT OF UNION of 1840. The province was Canada West and Canada East until 1867 when the Dominion of Canada (federal state) was formed with Canada West (Ontario) Canada East(Quebec) ,New Brunswick and Nova Scotia joining to form the Dominion of Canada. Thus the Provincial issues of 1858 and 1859 are listed quite correctly in both Haxby and Charlton catalogues.
