Prominent-
The following is a press release from NGC

NGC graders recently encountered a particularly interesting mint error on a 2015 One Ounce $50 Gold Eagle. The coin exhibits an incredibly large and deep struck through on the reverse.

Struck throughs mint errors are caused when a piece of foreign material (often lint or grease) is struck into the surface of the coin. The foreign material then becomes dislodged but leaves behind a recessed area where the design was not struck. The name "struck through" (sometimes shortened to "struck thru") indicates that the coin was struck through a piece of foreign material.

While it is not uncommon to come across minor struck throughs on American Eagle bullion coins, it is rare to see large ones. These images show a 2015 One Ounce $50 Gold Eagle where a large area of the reverse obstructed by foreign material. An error of this size is seldom encountered and is highly desired by error collectors.

Also shown is an image of a 2015 One Ounce $1 Silver Eagle with a large struck through around the perimeter of the obverse, most likely caused by excess grease on the coining die.

Prominent-

NGC attributes major mint errors for an additional fee of $15. To submit a mint error for attribution by NGC, select an applicable NGC grading tier along with "Mint Error" under services and the line them.

On a $50 Eagle, this is not confidence-inspiring.

That coin is money. Somebody will reach for it.

How did nobody catch that before it left the mint. They do inspect them right?

I suspect that they know some people collect them so they let a few of them get out on purpose. That way it is a win win for all involved.

What kind of premium would be added to this coin. Me personally I don't own any gold coins but if I get the opportunity one day I would prefer a perfect error free gold coin. Don't get me wrong I love my errors but this coin is in whole different league. The over my head League.

Struck throughs are someone easier to get through the quality control procedures, because they are usually 1 off errors. Errors that derive from some type of striking error such as a major die break or from a die cap continue to be struck until the problem with the die is fixed.

I believe they did catch it, then brought it into the collectors hands! Very nice, is it Struck Through Grease or metal. it looks more like metal!
