MS62FB. Looks like the dark coloring may indicate improper storage of some type. I'm thinking it was in a soft plastic flip for quite a while

Mercury dimes were very popular from the very start, so a lot of 1916 dimes were set aside by the general public and people who weren't serious coin collectors. As a result, there is a pretty large surviving population in mint state or high-AU, but a lot of them were mishandled or poorly stored (just tossed in a drawer or envelope or something.) So you see quite a few with lots of contact marks, dark toning or fingerprints.

 well it looks like I'm the lone wolf here. I have to say CH AU-55. too many tiny hits on reverse and nice hit on obverse. not crazy about the texture of the coin in general. HOW EVER--- full split bands !! |

The texture and strike are normal for 1916.

This was in fact improperly stored in an envelope with other coins for many years, maybe since the twenties.
