While browsing a Heritage Auction I found an 1883 dime I really liked, a PCGS 1883 MS-64 CAC. I decided to try and see what the Fortin number for the piece and found it looked like it has the Obverse 15 of F-115 but the reverse was not the Reverse O of the F-115 which is a perfect die. This 1883 I was looking at has some, as Gerry put it, nasty and atypical die clashing behind Liberty's head and the reverse does not match either of the two known 1883 dimes with a DR (Denticle Ruler) of -1B0.

I sent large clear pictures of the coin to Gerry and he confirmed it is a previously unknown die pair. I now own the dime and it is an upgrade to replace the MS-62 1886 dime in my type set.

Very cool find and excellent sleuthing, detective work on your part, way to use knowledge to uncover a new variety and die pairing, congratulations!

I'm sure the Seated Liberty Collectors Society will be most interested in hearing about this new find.

I will be getting the coin in today's mail this afternoon and next week it will be off to Gerry Fortin for imaging for his new discoveries page and web-book. I have already posted this dime on the Liberty Seated Coin Collectors forum http://seateddimes.yuku.com/topic/4....VNZESyzSMSU

This is actually the second dime that I have found that was a new discovery. The first was an MS-63 1877 dime with a spectacularly shattered reverse die. It was listed on his New Discoveries page on January 24, 2014. I eventually sold it to him. This image shows the NINE exit points of the die cracks to the rim. This die probably did not last much longer after this coin was struck.
