Hello all coin collectors! I have a picture of a 1923-S Standing Liberty quarter in very bad shape. Is it really desieranbly even in this condition? It was found in the earth during metal detecting.

S looks funky to me but maybe I'm wrong. 1923-s SLQ is desirable in any grade.

While it is highly doubtful that someone soldered a fake s on it and then buried it for fifty years, it does have considerable enviro damage. An acetone soak will clean the coin and not damage the value. I agree with Cs, a 1923s has value in any condition.

From the remaining details it looks like it was dropped while in nearly uncirculated condition. Rinse off the dirt you can and do not clean it any further than that. It is worth having it authenticated. It will not grade but having it in a details labeled holder will make it much easier to get it sold for a decent price when/if you decide to sell it.

If it were mine, I would be inclined to have it authenticated. I would expect a 'details' grade.

I would get it graded. It will most likely not get into a problem free slab, but you will be able to be 100% sure it is real.

That is an amazing metal detecting find!
The rest of the detecting world, me included, is both jealous and happy for you.

You hit the jackpot as this is a scarce date in that grade! That's probably around a grand there! Sure, you must take the enviornmental sacrifices on metal detecting, but congrats on the find! Given that this coin has AU details, with proper cleaning you could still net this coin at least a VF and with careful cleaning an EF. This ANACS EF40 Details sold for $1170: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-S-Stan...t_1663wt_948

I don't see any show-stoppers that make me think this is not a genuine '23 S Standing Liberty quarter. Incredible find!!

Quote: That's probably around a grand there! With all the corosion maybe a couple hundred. Numismedia says $300 in G-4. Corroded coins are hard to price.
