This seller has offered a lot of BU Indian Head cents. They all look the same to me when it comes to color and surfaces and I have suspicions that some of them are cleaned and/or recolored. Having had an Indian come back from NGC last year with a details "Unc. Details - Altered Color" grade I've grown a lot more careful about Indians. That coin had me completely fooled. I was expecting "MS-64 Red". I'm not skilled enough yet to say these are not original coins, so I thought I'd ask the opinions of others. I'm also not accusing the seller of offering altered coins, but do want to learn more so I don't repeat my mistake of last year. Here's one that looks nice and sold for $114. I'd say it's original, but I'm not 100% sure about it considering some of his other coins. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1901-Indian...p=true&rt=ncYou can see some of the other Indians he's offering that don't look as original as the 1901 to me. His Lincoln cents appear OK to me. http://www.ebay.com/sch/wholesale_c...047675.l2562Paul Bulgerin

I like 52Raymo's system on these. The first one looks seriously polished.

I've seen this seller for several years on ebay yet he only has a feedback score of 580. You really have to be careful of buying "red" Indian Heads online. Pinwheel luster is what you're looking for. Many times it's hard to see when the seller posts pics of coins in those junky cardboard 2x2s.

Check his feedbacks. Cleaning appears to be one of his specialties.

I have a book that shows exactly how these are made. High quality fakes have been made in the U.S for decades. Anyone with a shotgun can set it up in a jig to hub dies to strike fake coins. Close examination with a loupe and visual comparison alongside a known genuine coin is what is needed to pick the fake example. Examination has to be done 'in hand'. Impossible to do this with a picture posted on ebay. A twenty foot pole? A 10 foot pole should be good enough. Just make sure it has a shotgun cartridge powerhead on the end.

Anytime I see a seller who's coins all look basically the same, it raises a huge red flag. I've seen this seller before and put them on my "just say no" and "better safe than sorry" lists.

True about sellers who have coins that all look the same. I was looking at Morgans like that as a matter a fact. All look the same, shiny looking with a Eagle with no chest feathers.

If his coins were gem BU they would be in slabs as they would bring stupid money.
His coins are not in slabs for a reason. That reason is they won't slab with clean grades.

Quote:I've seen this seller for several years on ebay yet he only has a feedback score of 580. Why would that make you suspiscious? I've been Selling a few yrs longer than him, but only have a selling feedback score of 270 Everyone is new on ebay at one time or another, or doesn't have the volumes to rack up 1000s of feedback per year. There are other reds flags about this seller to focus on besides the number of transactions.

Quote: Why would that make you suspiscious Sorry I should have been more precise. What makes me suspicious is the fact that if these were real Gem Bu coins they would sell like hot cakes. Just from the photos I can pretty much tell they've been whizzed. Quote: If his coins were gem BU they would be in slabs Not necessarily. I personally do not buy slabbed coins and I purchase mint state Indian Heads from time to time. In fact I lament the fact that many of the good ones are slabbed as I do not trust the TPGs to accurately grade coins. This seller is a whizzer. Another telling thing is that on all his negative feedback he claims that: a) buyer is mistaken b) buyer is rude c) buyer is a bad eBayer The seller is the bad eBayer here.

Paul,
Just a note.....just because NGC says a coins color is altered/cleaned, doesn't mean they are correct. Not sticking up for this guy and I don't normally buy online as there is too much shady stuff going on (which I tend to think esp when someone has a continuous supply of MS coins), but I have also sent coins to NGC and had them come back as cleaned when I knew that wasn't the case. I have also seen slabbed stuff of theirs showing coins that were clearly cleaned but listed as ms-6x with no designation so take the prof grading with a grain of salt.
As always, caveat emptor.
