I received a request today for good places to sell your old coins. He has US coins from 1820's on, mainly dimes. Tell you the truth I have never sold nor purchased any of my coins. But, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions?
Rest in Peace

If the coins are generally worth less than $300/coin, than ebay is the place to sell them.

Welcome to the CCF!

ebay works well for some things, but lower grade, common coins sell better in local auctions, I've found. Antique auctions tend to be the best. Another way to sell coins is to take them to a local coin club, but I suggest attending a few meetings, first. See what members are buying material and casually approach a few about selling. To my experience, those who belong to clubs and actively participate tend to be more fair in their dealings. Some clubs allow folks to put items in their auctions for minimal or no commission.

For the early bust and Seated dimes he should contact Gerry Fortin as he is a Seated dime specialist and always looking to buy original early dimes in all grades for his customers and would probably offer more for them than a local coin shop. This is his email address *** Private information removed by Staff. Please do not post your address/email/phone number etc. ***

What are the interests/motivations of the seller? i.e. how much time/interest do they have in research, is the motivation to just sell them all quickly or maximize $. You could just take them to a pawn shop, coin shop, get a coin shop appraisal and decide, put the whole lot on ebay highlighting a few "most valuable" coins, split into lots, etc etc.

If you have never purchased any coins does that mean you are so young your parents buy them for you or did you inherit them or what?

As to selling any coins, ebay is probably the best place. If not sure or don't want to mess with ebay, just try a local coin shop. Of course at those you will never get as much for a coin as on ebay.
