Just got my first bag O'wheat cents to search and I came across this interesting specimen. This is a first for me so I hope the pic works. It is a bit fuzzy but I think it shows the area well enough .

Notice the small , almost horizontal raised area under the 9 in the date. It is raised not incuse, and it has a small tail at a right angle to it towards the bottom of the 9. There seems to be a hit at the bottom of the 9 also, not sure if it is a continuation of the errant "D" strike or just a hit. Any takers ?
I was unable to find this in the CherryPickers Guide or in the RPM book at my dealers shop. I am also wondering if it might be worth getting an attribution ..You watching this CC ? :) Thanks in advance for all of your help !

I don't think it is a missplaced MM. But I don't know what. It's my guess. Wait for the experts.

Well, I'm certainly no expert, but it doesn't look like a MM to me. I'd guess a small gouge in the die, making the small raised mark on the coin. That would suggest other coins were produced with the same mark. I'm not familiar enough with 'cherrypicking' to know if that sort of mark is considered significant or collectible.

It's a die crack. These are especially common on 1952-1954 D mint cents.

Thanks CC , I had not encountered any cracks in that area and I kinda thought it might be a crack . The length and the little right angle just made it look like a half a D. The only reason I even questioned it is that I have seen similar "misplaced mintmarks " on other coins in the Cherry Pickers Guide that look like partial mint marks...can't win 'em all ! Back to the search ...
