The Fortune site's article did a good job explaining just how BAD of a deal that these ads are.

Like they said at the beginning of the article, these " back of the magazine " offers are a time honored tradition. You would think that " knowing better " would also be a time honored tradition.

By the way Fortune, don't bother buying the X-ray specs. Mine never worked, could never see anything good.

As a child, I remember in the 1950's of small 'back of magazine' advertisements offering a huge sum of money to buy 1913 Liberty Head nickels.

The advertisers knew quite well that their money would be safe. (I wonder how many extremely excellent fakes and alterations of '13 Liberty Head nickels now exist as a result of such advertising?)

It's funny, how they can twist the meanings of words around to essentially lie without actually telling a lie.

For example, it's true that the Indian Head nickel is "rarely seen," if you're talking about everyday life. But that doesn't mean that they're rare. And it's true, one Indian Head nickel could indeed be worth hundreds of dollars--if it's a rare date in BU condition. But nowhere does it say you'll be getting one of those. And yes, just like the saleswoman said, the market for the nickels could have already increased by 70%. Then again, it might have decreased by 70%. Or done diddly squat. (And just the fact that they use the term "Indian Head" is a tipoff that they're not real dealers. I would assume that most real collectors and dealers prefer the term "Buffalo.")

I'd love to call one of these goofballs and pretend I was an innocent customer, and then start asking them questions that would make them have to admit it's all a scam. But I'm too nice a person--unlike them.
