Maybe all the snow is getting to me, or old age, not sure. But it just dawned on me how error collecting has changed (I believe for the good ). I am a casual ( don't claim to be an expert ) error collector for the past 45 years. I used to receive several early mailing list, auction catalogs, attended shows regularly. Studied the Oddities books. And I can say I don't remember multi denomination six cent, 11 centers, Mulled two headed / tails ( Magician Coins ) etc in the quantity as at present or at all. Maybe I didn't pay attention to them because they were way out of my price range? At one time the torches would have been lit and these coins would of been run outta town / confiscated and destroyed. Has the mint slacked in what leaves their doors? Or was there a large quantity of Great Classic Errors destroyed or discarded as junk,or hoarded into some of the great private error collections of the time, hidden from the public? Would enjoy your thoughts, comments, Photos Thank You

What you're saying is certainly true for the UK series.

There has been a huge amount of errors and varieties since the time I was a high school collector.

I'm sure better technology in magnifiers and cameras is an important part but so are higher prices and competition among dealers to differentiate their offerings and among numismatists to find something 'new' that hadn't been researched before.

When I was at high school, errors or varieties had to be really major before the professionals got interested.

There's also a lot more reference listing errors or varieties than before and I think that stimulates interest and demand.

Since the start of WW2, and especially in more recent years, the huge production runs of coins required for circulation
makes the checking for minor errors very unproductive, if not well nigh to impossible.

sel_69l is right, though I suspect that up to about 30 years ago, it was a matter of pride for national mints to try to ensure that error coins did not get out.

I think that the private mints making coins for other countries want to maximise profits, keep wage bills down and don't care so much about quality.

When the coins were sold in bags, more errors were found. Not that they are in the pallets and sent to the roll distrubution locations, they are supposed to send the error coins bag back to the mint. So the error are a little less since 2001. The 1999 year saw a lot of off center coins being found. So it they don't fit into rolls/found, they are supposed to be sent back. Seems like just certain collectors are still getting these though.
Here is one I recently purchased. (Only because I didn't have an off center.
