Hello, everyone.

I apologize for creating the same old topic but I thought it would be better to differentiate it from others to make it easier to find and comprehend.

I bought this Thaler recently on a traditional Arabic Market in Oman. I hadn't had enough knowledge regarding this coin before I bought it so right now I am in a little concern. I am trying to find place and approximate time period of its minting. According to my little research with the help of Walter Hafner's book I think it looks like Vienna mint, 20th century, but I am not sure 100%.

You can find these pictures attached and I hope you professionalism will help me to identify this coin. Please send me message here or to

With best regards,

Korodoro

First off, welcome.

I like your coin from the standpoint that it appears to have actually circulated in commerce. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Oman was one of the last places where it was widely so employed.

You are likely correct about its being a 20th century restrike variant. There are some real experts here in these who may well be able to nail that down for you.

Seems genuine from the pictures.
Check accurately for weight.
These coins were struck at many mints throughout Europe, including London.
The cartouche next to the date needs to be examined by someone familiar with them, to determine which mint from which this example originated.

Its a genuine modern restrike. Dates to pre 1960 Vienna mint( very quick scan). Worth: bullion value

Muscat Oman was indeed the last place to demonetise the MTT in 1971. In 1982 there were reports of it still being used to pay shepard boys in the northern regions of Ethiopia. Before Boko Haram became a problem it was being used as local money ( not official) in Bornu.

More likely to be a H57 specimen. The mint period is from 1930-45/50 in accordance to Hafner's lexicon. This is a common type MTT restrike.

Thank you, Lucky Cuss.
Yeah, they even used these coins as parts of the necklaces in Oman. It's their first currency.
Sel_69L, the weight is 28 grams.
Austrokiwi, thanks for additional information. This coin is considered to be as one of the most popular among those who Is fond of collecting.
Wonghinghi, thanks for an opinion. It might be right.

Next time I go to that market I will try to find some rare old restrikes of that coin lol.

Hope to hear some other professional opinions though. Thanks to everyone.

When I see this coin, there is a question in my mind. This coin has no collar at all. Thjs is surely not due to the restriction of technical problems. Is it a tradition to keep the MTT restrikes collar-less deliberately as if they were produced as early as late 18th Century? If I guess true, it is for the reason of respect to the original desire or it is for the reason of trade? Austokiwi, could you share your idea? Henry
