Slanting "5" variety. Looks like a mid-VF grade.

I'm at work on my phone right now so I can't really see the coin well. I'll be happy to grade and attribute when I get home later.

My gut without checking says 35, so I'm pleased to see somebody else already said that...

Before I give you a grade I have to warn you I'm an Early American Copper member and we are very strict when it comes to grading copper coins. Don't get upset when I say this is a VF-25. Plus it's a weak strike so I'll deduct 1 grade for that. Giving this coin an EAC grade of 25/20, meaning VF-25 sharpness VF-20 net grade. This coin is the N-1 die variety with a rarity of R.1 meaning it's one of the most common 1856 varieties. So my EAC grade is 1856 N-1 R.1 25/20.

Nice description of this coin celticsoul. I would have graded it a little higher but understand why you gave it a 25/20

I'm not an EAC person, so I'm a little more lienient when it comes to grading Large Cents like yours. Aside from all that, I have to say that's one good lookin' (problem free) Large Cent.

I already read that thread. However, that coin does "look" good. For example, if I were to see it for sale somewhere, I would have assumed it wasn't cleaned.

Quote: if I were to see it for sale somewhere, I would have assumed it wasn't cleaned I assume they've ALL been cleaned at one time or another. The question remains. "Do I want this coin in my collection?" I recently posted a cleaned coin in the grading section and several people lamented the fact that it had been cleaned. I don't. I think it's a great coin. It was priced accordingly so I pulled the trigger. All too many times we get stuck on labels like "cleaned" or "environmental damage" with out seeing the beauty of the coin.

We may differ on whether all coins have been cleaned or not. I find it as being too general of a phrase. However, I couldn't agree more with your statement: "Do I want this coin in my collection." I just finished proofreading what I wrote and realized I'm really throwing this thread in another direction. I'm done.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant all large cents.

Total misunderstanding on my part. Ain't the first (or last) time either.
