I am far from an expert but this coin seems to me to be over graded by NGC. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1871-NGC-Ce...em3f46f11c6dMany of the letters in LIBERTY are barely visible. It looks to be an F12 at best. Am I close? I am looking to upgrade my 1871 but not with this coin.

Yeah, I agree, I'm not an expert either but VF30 seems a bit extreme. Maybe VF20, with the wear on the Indian's head dress and ribbon I can't see any higher if even that. And, not fussy about the dig on the obverse either.

I think they graded the strike not the wear. F12 or 15 for me but nice original color. nlp

NGC always over grades coins. This is to be expected.

Looks high to me. The wear is weird but the coin by definition has "most of LIBERTY". I would not say that NGC under grades all coins but some here just under-grade everything and just say "it is their opinion".

I think the color is artificial brown. that deep cut on obverse is an eyesore. I'm no expert either , but ill say F-15.

1871 IHC are notorious for weaker strikes, I'd say VF20/25 at best, I don't think it makes a VF35 grade at all. With that bad scratch on the obverse I wonder why it isn't a details coin.

Huh, was not aware of the weak strike of that coin. If that was me and I was selling it raw, I would consider it a fine coin and list it as such, discounted for a quick sell.

with westcoin. It's just a weak strike. However, I believe the grade was a little generous.
