With all of the MS 67 coins listed and sold in the Landon and other auctions this week where does one get a price on the MS 67 coins, Trends and Charlton does not have a reference?

Coins of this magnitude do not trade regularly. For instance the 1915 large cent MS67 that went for $9700, will not trade hands for years!! The same goes for many of the other ultra high end stuff. When that stuff does sell, it always depends on who wants it at the time, and it is usually only 2 or 3 people, as was the case with the 1915 large cent. The only way to establish a price is by the old saying.a coin is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it at that time. No price guide can ever predict that. If one plans to deal in these high end coins, you need to get rid of price guides and collect auction catalogues with realized prices instead.

Any collectors involved at that level are of three kinds of people
1 the first kind is a true collector well educated in numismatics who has the means to back his pursuits. I had the pleasure of sitting next to a gentleman of this calibre last night at session 3 What a cool conversation that was.The gentleman was a class act indeed .

2 Investors who have all kinds of money, know nothing or little about numismatics and just throw cash at finest knowns for the so called investment purposes. This what the Victoria Nirth sale was all about.

3 Dealers looking for coins for 1 and 2 .

These coins trade at the fine art end of the spectrum. Like asking for a price list for Picassos. You can find out what it went for last time but that has very little to do with what it will sell for next time.

Having purchased one of the MS67 reds that first night (I got the 1887), I agree totally with Pacificoin. You have to know what you want, why you want it, and be able to afford it. My thought process went like this:

In the case of the coin I purchased, I have a MS65 RB 1887 cent in my collection. I wanted an upgrade.

Buying such a coin involves knowing how to grade it yourself and how other grading services might handle it. I have my collection in PCGS holders. I expect them to grade my new coin 66 red or 66+ red, not 67.

You also need to know how and to whom other similar coins have sold in the past. The only other PCGS MS-66 red has sold twice, once for $11,500 USD plus juice and once for $15,000 USD plus juice. I know where it is and don't expect it to be available any time soon.

Lastly, I don't expect to sell my collection for at least another decade. So $8,800 USD was within the number I expected to pay at the sale. Even then, I realize there is no guarantee that I will break even on this coin and I'm okay with that.

Cheers, Rob

Thanks for replies, that certainly sheds light on the topic for me. I have no desire to sell the coins I was able to win bids on and do not mind the extra costs that comes with the purchases made. I'mnot in it for profit, just nice to add a few more to my collection.

Trends prices are generally made for coins which trade frequently. Once you get into the ultra high grades, it's all about eye appeal. In cases for unique/pop 1 coins the "trend" price is set by what it sells for at auction.
