Evening folks This coin should have been done by now but for some strange reason I cant find a match, a fairly common type with an unusual reverse. Reverse - Victory Advancing Left Holding Trophy & Dragging Captive. Cross in Circle in left field. SM? mintmark. Tiny thing, 1.01g. The symbol of a cross within a circle on the reverse is listed as being 1 of 4 names, Theodosius,Valentinianus ii,Arcadius or Honorius. Due to the legend being unreadable I have tentatively attributed it as Valentinianus ii. 99% of the examples I have found have the " chi rho " symbol in the left field and none have the cross in a circle, the captive also is different to the others I have found due to his hands being free and in full stride pose. He isn't bound so does that still make him a captive ? Any help appreciated TIA *** Edited by Staff to clarify topic title. Titles are important! ***

Well this is one of those reverse types that don't show up very often, I've only seen one or two before the the cross enclosed in a circle. I believe your coin is Arcadius with the reverse of SALVS REIPVBLICAE, mint mark SMN? for Nicomedia RIC IX 45c.7

'tenbobbit' there might be enough of the legend to nail it down to a specific emperor. But that would certainly need better pictures. We don't do hand-readings here, just close ups of the coin will do.

I've enhanced the image a bit.

Thanks 'echizento' but may need a new picture with good contrast setting to be sure. Anyhow there seems to be an N at 01:30 and the ones around could read "...IANVSPFAV...", so most likely Valentinian II. Postscript at: Quote: Maybe I should come out of retirement Better not, if you field at square leg England might have a chance. Btw, when you apply for Australian citizenship you are told that the Barmy Army is enemy number one and that sledging is compulsory.

I could be wrong but I don't know of or can find any examples either in AE3 or AE4 of Valentinian II having the Cross in the circle.

I blew up your obverse pic. Clearly an "N" at 1 o'clock which makes Valentinian II the only possibility. DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG

I tried, That's about as good as I am going to get unfortunately, maybe natural will improve it slightly but that will have to wait till later. Thanks for your efforts so far Echizento, the longer I stare at it through the loupe the more I see IANUS from 12-2. Still not sure though.

Seems even the start of the legend might be legible. Do you have a multi-function printer. Scanning can provide very good pictures - on some scan I could read characters which I couldn't detect with a loupe.

With the N in the legend that would make it Valentinian II.

good job BD, I wouldn't have figured it out.
that little cross in a circle on the reverse is cool, I haven't seen one of those.

Where would you rate it Echizento ? Scarce or Rare ? Its nice to have a couple of rarer types in my collection already.

Would have to come up with a RIC number, but I would call it uncommon at least.

Nicodemia RIC IX 45a rated scarce, however the only examples I can find so far have just the chi-rho without the circle (same RIC # either way). I would imagine w/circle might be a bit harder to find
