Was told coin was originally all plated.
Any way to know if zinc or hazardous waste :)
By the way, we used to play with mercury when
we were kids. I mean for you younger folks do not eat it or anything like that. Jeeesh... probably better off to dispose of it properly.
I have another 1962 lincoln completely coated.

Looks like mercury to me. Best not to mess with it anyway. Definitely not an error, so dispose of it accordingly. A 1919 cent in G4 is a 2c coin anyway.

Thank you for the info.
Curious, why would they plate it in the first place ?
I think my 1962 is zinc. Will post it later

Could have been silver paint that worn off the coin?

:) Not my hands...
Got it recently in a bank roll.
I showed it to two local dealers and they both agree it is mercury.
The usaf gentleman who replied earlier was correct. I just wondered
again why the heck it would be plated in the first place that's all.
No big deal.

I lean in coops direction. I suspect it has been spray painted and over the years it has peeled off.

Coins covered in mercury have a slightly different appearance when it wears off. It doesn't usually get too flaky such as the paint that I think is peeling off the surface of the coin.

Thanks,
Bill
