I have several large incomplete or partial clips on 1-cent coins and nickel dollars, including coins that had separated apart after the strike. But, the majority of clipped coins I do handle are much smaller... "Where are the smaller incomplete clipped coins?" I found myself asking...

Well, look what I found in a 1963 sealed mint bag of 1-cent coins... A lovely little incomplete clip on this nice mint state 1963 cent (with a die clash as well).

hanging three and a incomplete (small) clip... can I have it... hahah. I think the reason you don't find many is it takes more energy to cut a larger surface area of metal than I small piece of metal to be sheared off. In other words the incomplete clips when they are small are more easily clipped right off. instead of the elliptical style clipped planchet. Since you are a scientists you are probably quite aware of this.

Very nice find indeed!
