Ran across this on ebay and passed on it as I did not believe it to be an S/D. It was represented as a 1950 S/D.
Nobody got robbed, it sold for melt.
But now I am wondering if it might have been tooled in a poor attempt at deceit.
Any thoughts?

Looks like a normal mint mark. Here is what one of the OM's looked like:
1950-Washington-S/D-.--.--.--.-Or-Is-It?
But the other OM was similar. I don't have an image of it at this time.

I find this. The open ends of the "S" are closed.
Leading me to the theory that I am entertaining.

The mint mark look like that this year:

OK, I will back off of my thoughts that the seller (or someone prior to) tooled it. I thought those marks on the MM looked suspicious and it stuck in my mind.
I have no idea why the seller would think it was an S over D.
But no one was fooled, it went for $5.00 or so.
