Saw this 1878-S with the reverse of 79: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1878-S-Silv...em1c4e578f21With the "Ask Seller a Question" feature, I advised the seller this was a copy as San Francisco did not use the 79 reverse for their 78 Morgans. No response yet. Then checked sellers other offerings ... all cheap copies. And people are still bidding. Knowledge will keep you safe.

They look like an estate saler who caught a stack of fakes.

Doesn't accept returns. Doubt he is unaware.

Showing to be an ebay member since 2003, this seller over the last year has been dealing mostly in art, but last summer he was moving some CC Morgan & Trade dollars, and more recently an 1895-O Morgan. Nobody's done anything but leave positive feedback on those items, but that doesn't mean they weren't taken.

I reviewed the feedback and also saw past sales of key date coins for big $$$$. Unfortunately they were too old to see the listing. I have a gut feeling that these were also bogus. There are too many ebay coin buyers who lack knowledge, have an over-abundance of trust, and fail to have their purchases authenticated ... or if they do they are too embarrassed to admit their ignorance.

The 1878 (I emailed him too) is the only *obvious* fake he's offering, but the images aren't good enough to form conclusions about the rest.

Dave, I can't access ebay from this location, but I recall one with beaded denticles and another with a missing ear.

Alright after being able to pore over them, the 1878 is bogus. The 1890 also looks bad (the date). The others *could* be genuine. Better pictures needed, though.

I have been advised years ago by several dealers I knew then, most are either retired or deceased now, if you have any doubts or just do not feel right about a coin "DO NOT BUY IT." If you do most likely you will come to regret it. For these dollars from this seller I would say just move and forget about them. Members of this forum have been warned via this thread, at least those who have read it to learn more about the types of fakes now appearing on ebay. Someone should report these to ebay that can describe why they are not genuine better than I but do not be surprised if ebay does nothing.

Indeed, I keep clicking report and filing them, but ebay hardly does anything about them. Hundreds of coins. Only a handful are pulled down, and those are mostly by contacting the seller who then acts in good faith.

In my experiane if anyone reports them as fake, ebay will pull it. I sell a lot of Woodies on ebay, and one of my auctions was pulled bccause an "expert" said that one of my auctions was a "fake" because....real Lincoln cents don't have streaks in them! And there is NO WAY to fight this when they pull your ad.

He wrote this in the item condition section:
"I am tired of getting those unfriendly emails. All I know was I bought the coin more than 30 years ago. Now I'm selling it. If you don't believe it's the real one; so be it. ..."

I just sent him a message, more strongly (but still politely) highlighting the consequences of investigation by the FTC or SS if they don't pull it.

Good news....he took down the listing on the '78 because "there was an error in the listing."
The '90 is still up for grabs though.
