Saw this lot. Is that half dollar the real deal? Edited by The Silver Searcher 02/19/2015 6:50 pm

Ummm....no. A'43D Copper to boot. They are pretty clear in the description...."This auction is for 3 Souvenir , they have no collection value"

Well, okay. I don't collect early halves, so what (aside from the description I was hoping was wrong) makes it stand out as a fake?

The whole thing looks crude to me. The mushy details of the shield stand out in my mind. Odd almost perfect circulation "toning".....

The bust half looks fake, fake, fake to me - just my humble opinion of course.

I believe I trust the seller's opinion. The Half might be contemporary, but unlikely. Frankly, it's too good. Detectable as a fake (letter misalignment/weakness), but better than the majority of contemporary counterfeits.

Modern fake. The obverse might fool somebody that doesn't know the series but the reverse is way off.

The half has a eire rim on the obverse. Those didn't exist until the 1830's when the US started using collars for their coins.

While the seller's description is honest, listing replicas like the 1809 is contrary to ebay policy.

Yes, it's a direct violation of ebay rules but they don't care any more.

Well, I just tried to bid on it with 8 seconds left, but I didn't realize I was signed out for ebay. Crap. My plan was to donate these to the Black Cabinet if Steve didn't already have examples. I really like the look of the half dollar, even though it is fake. My bid was $25.00, so I would have lost anyway.

Darth ... Fine thought, that. Sadly, pieces like these, the 1809 and the 1943-D may someday be sucker bait.

From what I read, replicas are not allowed that aren't clearly marked. Calling them souvenirs is iffy, they should just say replicas.

ebay policies have different span ks for different ranks. But then with the Paypal split and the big layoffs ebay seems to be falling apart. Not a lot of nice stuff on their anymore. Just lots and lots of just junk. Even a coin show in a town of less than 10,000 in population has better eye appealing options. Okay Super Dave question for you --- yes "United States" looks fuzzy an weak and that's a tell but is the "9" in the date too high? This half just has an off appearance --- then the other thing is if genuine why would you throw it in with two sub $5 Lincolns?
