It's not about the camera. It's all about the lens and the lighting.

Great close-ups can be taken by anything from a cell phone to a $10K professional DSLR body.

Personally, I use a Canon T3i.

I use my Samsung galaxy note 4 phone, with a 10x loop. The lighting that coop suggested in a recent post, just made my photos much better.
Here is the link to that post. https://goccf.com/t/198582

Some of the regulars have this (literally) down to a science. The very best images you see here at Coin Community, from full images of large medals to microscopic details of repunched mint marks, can be duplicated with a total of about $400 in equipment. Half a dozen CCF'ers or more have already gone this route (they're among the ones whose images you're admiring). It's a skill, not a talent. It can be learned, and it can be taught. We teach it here.

With that said, many less-expensive setups including cellphones have proved to be perfectly acceptable coin imaging rigs. There's a small set of common skills you use for any coin work, teachable in one post, and the complicated part is maximizing the equipment you're using.

So here's where we figure out what's your most comfortable route forward.

I have been able to achieve great results using only a smartphone, and a loupe held in front of the lens. Here are a couple of shots that I did quite a while ago.

Using the camera set-up that Dave is referring too in his post above; I took this shot.

One of the biggest challenges with macro photography, is getting the right amount of light in the area that you are trying to shoot.

Awesome photos above! Can't believe you did the top two with a loupe and just good lighting. I find the photos as interesting and collectable as the coins. Just beautiful..
Thanks for all the pointers everyone. :-)
