I bought this at a show today. I deemed it to be a real copper coin in UNC, with decent luster left.

But, I brought it home and checked it with my catalog and there is a problem! The reverse doesn't match the photo. It's not totally different but it's missing an item in the dead center. The obverse is spot on and the reverse is not. Does that mean it's a fake? It does not seem to have any of the shortcomings that a fake usually has. And, it has the nice bluish luster of an UNC but brown copper coin.

The attribution is supposed to be Chekiang province. 1906. 10 cash. The person also wrote Y 10.2 on the bottom. NGC's website only lists a Y 10.1.

It's not from Chekiang, it's a China Empire issue.

Thank you for the info on it. Could you possibly tell me a bit more?

I see that the same obverse is on coins from many different provinces. On the reverse there is a character in the middle, which I think I've read is the mint mark, which would confirm the province? This coin has no mint mark in the middle. I am having trouble looking it up on NGC's website. How do you think I would find it?

Thank you for any help!

It's not from any particular province - or rather, the province of issue is not marked or stated on this coin at all. Such coins are called "general issues" out of convenience, though the reason behind not marking the province of issue usually had more to do with deception than with the provision of a generic empire-wide coinage.

You coin is listed right at the front of the Krause catalogue, under the heading "standard unified general coinage". Your coin bears the cyclical date that translates to 1906, so it is the one listed in Krause as KM/Y 10.2. Here's the NGC page.

Thank you all for your help! I do think it's a BU example, and now I've found more info about it elsewhere.

Just so you know, I looked back at the info on the envelope and it looks like I misread somewhat illegible handwriting. Now that I have more info to go on, I can see what the person meant.

Also, it was priced correctly for an Empire coin. I know the Chekiang ones cost 2 or 3 thousand dollars. This one did not cost that!!
