Hey guys,
I am aware of the low mintage of Germany 2 Marks 1951, seems like a one year issue. What I want to know is why this coin was minted only for a year before demonetized in 1958, and numista says G mintmark of the said coin is issued without "authorization".
Anyone can shed some light on this, as I am curious why.
thanks fellas.

I am assuming the reason was its unpopularity, due to it being too close in design and size to the 2 mark coin - people were getting the two coins confused too easily in commerce. When the 2 mark denomination was reintroduced in 1957, it was the same size and weight as before, but had a radically different design.

As for the "unauthorized" issue, I'd assume it's pretty much as Krause says - a mint worker took the opportunity to steal a set of dies, and used them (either at the mint itself or elsewhere) to make a bunch of "restrikes" - in effect, counterfeits. Note: not all of the 1951-G coins are unofficial - just an unknown number of them, and it's impossible to tell the difference since the dies used to make the "restrikes" were authentic.

The 2 mark 1951 was struck for several years like many of the early West Germany coins with a frozen dates. SAP is correct in his assumption that they were unpopular for the reasons given. I can personally attest to that because I was stationed there from 1956 to 1960. Like our own $2 bill, which can be confused with a $1 bill, people would spend them as soon as they received them because they were to easily confused with a 1 mark piece. As for the restrike 1951G 2 mark, they were struck by a mint employee several years later, along with earlier 5 mark commemoratives, using the original dies. To my knowledge, there is no way to distinguish restrikes from originals.

What makes those 2 DM coins from 1951 special is that they are the only coins from this country (Federal Republic of Germany) that were not only taken out of circulation but also demonetized. That is, with every other coin you can still go to the central bank and get current cash for it. Not with this one.
