Typically I always stay away from numismatic coins. I have a 1924 double eagle, and a couple of other rare date coins but almost all my collection is in bullion (Bars, ASE, AGE, etc...). I recently sold a couple of things on ebay for a pretty penny and I had some money sitting in a paypal account, so I bought one of these guys from APMEX on ebay.

Usually I will buy silvertowne bars before anything like this, but I have always wanted one of these carson city morgans! It's crazy thinking this thing is 130+ years old!

I hate to admit but I bought those from Uncle Sam (GSA) back when first offered in the early 1970s. Uncirculated 1882-CC, 1883-CC and 1884-CC were low priced, at about $30 each. Better dates 1880-CC, 1881-CC and 1885-CC cost double. Rarer dates were rumored. Mixed date coins with issues like toning cost half, at just $15, but they would not say whether you would be getting a Carson City for that price and it was assumed not. Ten years before the sale, silver dollars went for face value with $1000 bags still available if you went through commercial banking channels. During the sale, silver was somewhere near three or four times face and for $30 you could have bought a decent ten dollar gold piece. Private gold bullion ownership was on the horizon about to become legal. These were top dollar coins. After the fall in prices of the formerly rare 1903-O and 1904-O dollars, released in droves by the Treasury, it was not a sure thing these CCs would ever recover from having the majority of the mintage dumped onto the collector market all at once. It was the Wild West mystique that got me to buy them, but if you think about it they spent the wild west days locked up in a bank vault, never seeing the light of those days. What should I do with them now that the future I bought them for is finally here?

Thanks... I really did not even think about it being fake! I did some googling after your post and it seems these are pretty commonly faked!

It was such an impulse buy, but since it was from APMEX I am not too worried. Thanks for your input though. I really like getting some additional feedback on authenticity.
