How popular is it to try and complete a total decimal collection in UNC condition? That is what I am trying to do. I have to admit, the lines are blurred somewhat as what to include. The lines that I have drawn are:

-Coins that are produced by the RAM.
-Mint set only coins included.
-Commerative, provided they are the same size and composition of normal circulating coins. (I have included the coronation 50c, even though composition is different, and the Ocean Series is still on the fence at this point).
-Mint mark varieties only.

The only real challenge I have encountered so far, is simply the funds to purchase everything in the quality that I require. With that being said, pre-1984 coins are a bit more difficult as the mint sets allow people to remove and replace coins at will. I would think the amount of untouched coins from mint sets in this era would be few..

I have basically the same reasoning as you. I define my collection as "circulation style" coins. This includes coins from both mints (though the Perth Mint has not produced any since early 1 and 2 cent coins)...all mint marks etc but does not include proof coins.

My decimal set seems to have evolved into 'at least one from every year'. It's hard to keep up with the commemorative circulation coins, the standard issues, and the non-circulating types in each year, although that's been fairly recent. I'm just glad I don't have to go chasing down coins from both mints for the mintmarks.

Right now I'm trying to wrap up my 2 cent and 5 cent collections so I can get started on finishing the ten cent.

I have a near-complete $1 collection. From memory there are over 140. I have included all RAM $1 coins including NCLT and all the mintmarks including portable press. I have ensured all are CHUNC. I have both suffrage varieties.

The only ones I'm missing are the varieties that have different obverse sizes (1999) from memory. I'm looking for CHUNC in these

My set also includes a mule (2000), all the 'rabbits' (1984, 1985, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2006) and a 180 degree 2001 upset. These however are errors and probably should be included in an 'error' set. I'm also looking to replace some with these with at least UNC.

Over the last few years I have also been opening rolls of various denominations and keeping all the coins without bagmarks. I'm fairly well on the way to having a set of those too.

My latest task is a set of proof $1 coins. I am going to include all the silver proofs as well (Masterpieces in Silver, Fine Silver Sets, and individuals). I have a Smithy portfolio that I may pull apart to get to the silver smithy dollar (large head) variety. I'm only missing the coin fairs which have continous reeding.

Question: Do I pull the 2006 mule out of its set and put it into a dansco supreme Propbably not

Peter,
Actually, it is a proof 2005 $1 in a 2006 proof set. There were no 2005 Mob of Roo proofs made. There has been plenty of discussion on whether it is in fact a mule. I understand that there are at least 25 known and possibly up to 40 in existence.

There is one for sale on ebay at the moment with a BIN of $2499.

There are also 2006 sets that have a 2005 proof platypus. Same thing. No 2005 proof platypus were produced. Again, I understand these are even rarer that the above.
