Does anyone here collect them? I seemed to be drawn to it for some reason. Does anyone know the history behind it?

It is a Roman helmet. Britannia's roots can be traced back to the days when England was ruled by Rome, under the reign of Hadrian (around 121 AD). Some of the earliest coinage used on the island dates back to this time, with a seated figure, and the legend "Britannia" below the figure.

Thank you susan for the link. I guess no body collects them. I like the fact they change the reverse every year and would like to start a collection but wanted to get feed back before jumping in.

1. I am planning on getting a set of them, eventually. But right now, my focus is on a few other things, and I have given the Britannias a low priority. 2. The reverse doesn't actually change every year. All the even years (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004) have carried the same design, the standing Britannia. The odd years have been the various designs, as follows: - 1999 - Britannia in chariot
- 2001 - Britannia & Lion
- 2003 - "helmet head"
- 2005 - Seated Britannia
3. If/when you do decide to begin your collection, I would recommend checking the prices at http://www.silver-eagle-coins.com/prices.html, out of Toledo, OH. So far, they seem to have the best prices I can find on the net.

kuhli, thank you for the information and you're right the supplier you recommended has the best prices from what I've come across so far. Thank you for correcting on the reverse image too. Now I know I'm not the only one interested in the Britannia.

Shatsi:
I just made a post today regarding Britannia One Ounce silver coins.
I also collect them.
I have been looking for a way to display them, and that's what my post was about.
I not only collect them, but I feel they are among the world's most beautiful coins!
What's not to like about them? I'm surprised more collectors aren't "into" collecting them.
I hope to find a good way to display them soon.

Still looking for a way to display the Britannias.
I think they are 40mm, and I wonder if there is an air tite which would work for them.
If so, then the next step is to find a case, or album, for that size air tite.
