I've checked the fake coin reports but didn't find a match to this one so there is a good chance it's real. Reference to this Aureus is Calico 3299. Similar coins to this sold in the $3500 range.

Is that an Aureus? I will leave this to others, I am afraid I will give you the wrong answer. If it is real it would be a nice coin.

It is Aureus. I have doubts of its authenticity.

Forgive me for being to vague, but what I meant was does any thing specific about this coin make you feel uncomfortable. ex size or weight. Also is it being sold by a reputable dealer?

That's the issue. This coin is sold by a private collector.

1. Is the seller a collector himself (or has he dug it up with a metal detector)? 2. Does the seller guarantee the coin is genuine? 3. Does the coin come with any provenance? 4. Will the seller accept a return of the coin if you are unhappy? 5. Will the seller allow you enough time to have the coin verified?

Have you had a chance to examine the coin in hand? I noticed the spots also on the silver colored pictures, but they aren't there on the natural gold color ones. One of the reasons I stay away from any ancient gold coins is that they are so widely copied by expert forgers that it is very difficult to tell unless it is examined by an expert. I don't know what the asking price is, but I can imagine it's pretty high. Personally I would spend that money on a hand full of silver denarius or some Greek tetradrachms.

If you're buying from a private collector I would definitely arrange to have the coin examined by a professional dealer. You're probably talking about a lot of money here.
