I am an inveterate collector. I collect stamps, coins, baseball cards, other collector cards etc. I'm primarily a stamp collector, but I appreciate coins as well. I have submitted stamps for expertization as well as baseball cards on numerous occasions and know the process.
Recently I acquired a couple of common date Morgan dollars off of ebay that were advertised as DMPL. They arrived and appear to me..."as advertised." I would like to have them slabbed and graded by either PCGS or NGC. In going to their websites it appears that in order to accomplish that I have to "join" PCGS for a minimum of $149. NGC doesn't seem to require a membership, but they do have a 5 coin minimum at $18 per coin. So in order to get them graded with PCGS it's going to cost the $149 and NGC is going to cost $90, plus I'm going to have to buy 3 more coins.
Am I missing something here, or is this the way to do it?

You might consider ANACS, particularly if you intend to keep the coins.

NGC and PCGS both require memberships, although ANA membership qualifies you for NGC submission without their membership. Both TPG's offer membership levels with free grading vouchers; if you have enough coins to use all the offered vouchers at each membership level, the cost of that level is justified for you. ANACS does not require membership; anyone can submit.

Now, for the coins. A DMPL coin should clearly reflect 12pt newspaper type at a distance of 6-8" from every point in the fields on both sides. You can shave in a DMPL Morgan. You know if you're holding one.

However, polishing can create that look and the TPG's hold to a high standard for PL (4-6" instead of 6-8") and DMPL. If you could possibly post images - don't worry about showing actual reflectivity, it's tough - we can help evaluate the coins. Some Morgans are very tough indeed in PL/DMPL and warrant a substantial price premium.

I'm pretty sure these qualify as DMPL, but I want to make sure they haven't been altered in some way to bring out that reflectivity. They didn't set me back all that much...about $125 each, and yes, I'm aware that the '80, '81, and 82 S mints are the easiest of the Morgans to get in higher grades. I really only have these two coins to grade right now. I'll probably suck it up and join PCGS which might provide incentive to buy a couple more coins to grade.

If you have or establish a relationship with a local coin dealer, they will usually let you "piggyback" your coins on one of their submissions to the TPG. That way you will just pay the cost of your coin and not have to join.

Jfransch has a good point. There will be no lack of affiliated dealers in your area - heck, PCGS itself is in Newport Beach - so you will likely be able to form a cordial relationship with someone. Chances are that dealer will also be able to offer wise advice as to the quality and liquidity of your coins.

The Internet is a wonderful resource for disseminating numismatic information, but nothing beats leveraging a real-world relationship with an expert. Numismatics hasn't changed that much.

What about the events (usually a coin show) where they have PCGS available onsite. Must one join for that?

Here is a list of the shows they attend: http://www.pcgs.com/shows

You still need to join in order to submit onsite.
