UGH ...... did it again. Bid in an auction for two beautiful coins for my Libertad collection.A 1988 and a 1990. Got them home, Fished out my Libertad Dansco Album, all excited to put in my new additions only to find the 1990 hole filled. Oh darn, this wasn't the first time or second ...... or even third time I bought a coin I forgot I already had. I am going to call my parallel collections, my senility collection. Is it just me ?

It's not just you. I spent about ten years buying books and boxing them up in anticipation of moving to a new house and converting a room to a library. When I finally did that, I unpacked a few thousand books, and found up to six copies each of some editions. Don't ask how I could not remember already having 3 copies of James Michener's 'The Source' when I bought the 4th copy, it's not easy to find, so should have known I already had it.

That sort of thing happens to all of us old blighters! Do I euthanase or empathise? (your choice).
Found in an old Medical dictionary: definition of old age: Can't be avoided so you might as well enjoy it.
Actually I will quite happily buy duplicates, if the price is really good.

I'm thinking you don't have an inventory of your coins. or don't have it with you as your bidding.

It has nothing to do with age. You're developing a farm system.

I do this all the time. It's even worse for me because I record in my database the dealer I purchase the coin from, as well as date and cost of purchase. I really, really hate it when I bring a new coin home from a coin show, only to find I already have one - which I bought from the same dealer at the same coin show the previous year.
The only difference between you and me, denco, is if you keep your "senility collection". Whenever I buy a duplicate, I compare the two coins, the old and new - if one has better eye appeal or grade than the other, I keep the better one. If they're both much the same in every respect, then I keep the older one. The unwanted one gets sold off as soon as possible.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

It also works the other way. I thought I had two coins that were tied for top pop. Gave one away. I could have sworn I had two.

About a year ago - don't recall precisely - I accidentally bought two different Italian 10 centesimi coins of the same date (I think 1864, though I'm not entirely sure) on two successive days. On arriving home and checking the ziplocs I realized I now had two. Looked at them, tried to choose which was better, decided they looked too different to choose only one. Then, while looking up the type on Numista, I noticed that a different mintmark existed for that date. Sure enough, one of the coins had it, the other didn't; it was relatively tiny, so I didn't notice it originally. For what it's worth, neither of the versions was particularly rare, or, IIRC, even particularly rarer than the other; still pretty funny.

That is exactly why I have so many duplicate Albums. At a coin show I see a coin I just want. I do have my list of what I need but that coin just shouts to me BUY. So I do and although I may have several like it already, just one more Album to start. I've got well over 100 Albums and mostly due to buying coins I really don't NEED.

I did that with a Roosevelt dime. Luckily I went to another dealer than the one I bought it from and he traded one dime straight for the other .

I am glad to hear that we all do it. I just did it again last week.

Last coin show, I took a list of coins that I needed and still bought one that I already had. I just laughed at myself and chalked it up to another senior moment.
