My question are:

1) Is "struck through" an error? Does "struck through" command any premium, if it does, then under what circumstances and conditions?

2) To those "error purist": What are your definition of error, in its purest form? I know some people only consider DD as true error and said that mechanical error are "not really error"......

Thank you all.

1. A struck-through is an error, no matter to what degree. The value of a struck through depends on how obvious they are, and what material they are struck through. Grease is the most common form, and those usually do not command much premium. Struck through wire, thread, paper clips, scrap metal, cloth, planchets, struck coins, die caps, and other odd materials are generally worth quite a bit more.

2. Doubled dies are not errors. They are die varieties. Errors are any oddity formed from either the planchet making process or the striking process...the mechanical processes that make coins. Planchets are made incorrectly and it shows - those are errors. Dies or presses malfunction and it shows - those are errors.

Die varieties are oddities placed into the die before the die enters coin manufacture. These include repunched mintmarks (like a D/D), over mintmarks (like a D/S), doubled dies, repunched dates (like 1895/5), and over dates (like 1817/6).

Nope, unfortunately, but I've seen one.

Also seen a struck-through staple.

I once had a 1958 nickel struck through a staple with the staple still stuck in the nickel:-) That is sometimes called a "struck through and retained" error.

Wow, I never knew all the stuff that would be able to get stuck through. I'm guessing all of these errors mentioned are quite scarce and quite expensive, right?
