I am attempting to assemble a complete set of Buffalo nickels (not counting errors such as 3-legger) and do it for $64 or less. Obviously this will require acquiring most of the key dates as dateless coins that I restore. I saw that a poster did this a few years back in assembling a set for even cheaper, but he did it wil coin roll hunting which I will not be doing.

I began my collection yesterday by sorting through a bucket of random buffs at a flea market. I was able to assemble the first 21 coins of my set for $13. Here is a list of what I have acquired so far:

1919
1920
1923
1924
1926
1927
1928
1928-S
1929
1929-S
1930
1934
1934-D
1935
1935-D
1936
1936-D
1936-S
1937
1937-D
1938-D

I feel pretty happy about this first haul. Got a couple of decent dates in there. Here is my current budget breakdown.

21 coins acquired for $13. ($0.62/coin)
43 coins left for $51. ($1.18/coin to spend)

I have some bids in for groups of dateless buffs, so once I get those in hand and the dates revealed, that should help my budget. I will keep this thread updated as I make progress on this endeavor.

I wish you luck. The big challenge will be the key S dates!

From the research I've done, I should be able to assemble pretty much all the pre-1920 dates from dateless coins without too much of a hassle. The challenge comes with the later key S dates such as 21, 24, 26, 31. Hopefully I can find good deals on those in really crappy condition with enough persistence. Either that, or get really lucky and find dateless ones. I expect this challenge to take a little bit of time, but I do think it can be done.

Just remember that those restored dated coins are usually considered just messed up and of little value. Of course if your doing this for fun, who cares, right?

Yeah, I'm not looking to collect a set to re-sell. Just one that has every date for as cheap as possible. I might try to assemble a nicer set one day, but for now, I am fine with getting some really crappy coins to fill the early holes, just to see how cheaply it can be done.

Appears that you have established a clear collecting goal with a plan to achieve it ...

Best of wishes with the set.

Looking forward to the updates.

the 1913-s TII will cost you $35 acid restored, the 1915-s $10 acid restored, the 1921-s $10 acid restored, the 1926-s $8, the 1931-s $8. These (5) coins alone will cost more than $64.

It should be pretty easy for $64. Coin roll hunting only helped me find common later dates. I did find a 1921-S (full date) coin roll hunting, but I also found some from dateless lots so that actually didn't end up in the set. This reference image should help:

g048406: The plan is to buy dateless coins and acid treat them myself to find those dates. I agree it will be too expensive to buy them after being restored.

CaptainFwiffo: Thanks for the reply! It was your thread that I found through searching here that inspired me to do this. Any advice you offer is greatly appreciated.

I have a 1913 Type I with no date I found roll hunting. As far as selling on ebay, I can't do much with them unless they are high grade. Acid dates forget it, can't get a small percent for these, got stuck with them:
