Just got 27 dateless nickels and a bottle of nic a date from ebay. Taking out the retail cost of the nic a date, I paid $7.51 for the 27 nickels, or about 28 cents per coin. One of the coins is definitely a type one from the ebay picture, so I have that one covered. Hopefully these will fill a few of my earlier dates.

Interesting project. I recently acid treated in vinegar some of the dateless Buffalo's that I had accumulated roll hunting. I was curious as to what the dates were. I was planning on turning them back into the wild as I have no use for them. I already have a complete set of full date Buffaloes.
I have 1913 D T1, 1914, 1917D, 1918S that are not on your list. I would be happy to give them to you if you want them.

Thank you for the offer yooper! I have some dateless coins coming in the mail that I'm going to acid treat, so I will let you know after that so that you don't send me any duplicates.

OOOPS! Sorry superdave. I thought that since I was offering these for free that it wasn't a problem. Should I email directly if I do this again?

Sorry, dave! For the record, I really didn't start this thread with any intentions of soliciting coins from other people. I really am attempting to buy as many of the coins as possible on the open market to complete this set instead of having coins given to me because people want to help the collection along. I would feel more pride in my collection in completing it that way, even if it does cost me slightly more.

I have a pretty huge update today. Went to a flea market and my LCS and had a pretty monster day. I was digging through the buffalo bucket at the flea market and bought a 1920-S separately for 2 bucks. I also bought 6 dateless coins (all D/S) which are currently in vinegar.
Of the dated coins I bought, I came away with 17 coins for 11.45. That comes out to 67 cent per coin. Now here is the awesome part...check out the dates I got today.
1913 Type 1, ALL THREE MINTMARKS. The dates are rubbed off on all of them, but I got 3 raised mounds, all 3 of which were very clearly no mintmark, D, and S. I was pretty floored at that.
But even better, I got a READABLE 1913-P type 2. Cannot believe there was a readable 1913 in that junk bin. I was pretty stoked about that one.
And for the rest of my dates today: 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919-S, 1920-S, 1924-S (top 5 in rarity in series!, 1.4 million mintage), 1925, 1925-D, 1927-D, 1930-S, 1935-S, 1937-S.
So once again, I filled 17 holes today for 11.45, or 67 cents per coin.
In my first haul, I filled 21 dates for 13 dollars, or 62 cents per coin.
Total, I have filled 38/64 holes (NO acid dates yet) for 24.45. That comes out to 64 cents per coin.
I now have 26 coins to go and 39.55 to spend on them. That gives me a budget of 1.52 per coin to finish the set.
Hopefully these dateless ones I am revealing fill some holes. I will update when those dates are revealed.

I'm using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to reveal the dates, and I just had my first one of my 6 dateless revealed. A 1918-D, which is another hole filler! Now 39 down, 25 to go!

And we have another one revealed! 1916-S, another hole filler! 4 for 4 so far. The next two aren't even close yet, and might not be recoverable at all. So given that, I will go ahead and give my latest progress report.
The 4 dateless coins I revealed were 59 cents per coin, or 2.36 total.
So I have now found 42 coins for a total cost of 26.81, or an average of 64 cents per coin.
I have 22 coins left and 37.19 to spend on them. That gives me a budget of 1.69 per coin for the remaining coins. It's looking good so far!

For the ones that you're having a tough time getting the dates, try freezing the vinegar and draining out the water so you get a more powerful acid. Than add the Hydrogen Peroxide, that should do the trick.

I already have hydrogen peroxide in the mix. I actually did get the date off of one and am pretty close on the other. One was 1916-d, which was another hold filler, so I am 5/5 on this batch! The last one is definitely a 1917, but I am having trouble making out the mintmark. I think it's an S, which would be a hole filler, but I just can't be positive. Letting it soak a little longer in hopes it will reveal more of the mintmark.
I will post a final update from this batch later tonight when I can confidently identify the last coin.
