New update today! Picked up a 28-D and 29-D for a buck a piece from my LCS today. Usually his prices are higher than whatI can get the same coins for on ebay, but these were a pretty good deal. New stats: 56/64 coins found (87.5% complete) $32.94 spent on 56 coins (58.8 cents per coin spent) $31.06 left to spend on 8 coins ($3.88 budget per coin) Coins needed: 1913-D (2) 1913-S (2) 1915 1915-S 1921-S 1924-D 1926-S 1931-S

I have revealed another coin in this lot that I feel comfortable calling a 1913-D Type 2, and I think that does it for that lot. You absolutely cannot beat a 13-D and 13-S Type 2 in a lot though! Could not be more pleased. So on this lot I spent 76 cents per coin. 2 hole fillers, so 1.52 total. Here are the updated stats: 58/64 coins found (90.6% complete) $34.46 spent on 58 coins (59.4 cents per coin) $29.54 left to spend on 6 coins ($4.92 budget per coin) And now the final six coins needed: 1915 1915-S 1921-S 1924-D 1926-S 1931-S I believe I am now at the point where I can simply buy those 6 coins on ebay in acid dates or very low grades and still stay under my budget. I base this on sales I have seen of examples of each. Here is the budget I am setting for each coin, I will not buy any that cost more than these prices: 1915: $2 1915-S: $6 1921-S: $6 1924-D: $2 1926-S:$6 1931-S: $5 These would total up to $27, leaving me a couple of bucks to spare. So if I get down to the last coin or two and still can't find them at those prices, I will have some leeway. Wish me luck on this last leg!

Hey guys, I have a question on the vinegar thing. Can you leave them in Too Long?

Not that I have found. From the best of my understanding, what acid dating does is simply remove the top layer of the coin, and the layer underneath shows the date. I do not believe that that layer is affected by the acid. From all I have done, leaving the coin in the acid longer has never made the coin worse in terms of being able to read the date. Now I'm no science expert though, so I can't fully speak on the effects of leaving the coin in for a very long time.

ok, thank you. I had a few dateless V nickels and a few buff's laying around that were almost slick. I did the frozen vinegar thing without the hydrogen and left them in for 3 weeks. The solution turned blue and I just checked them. The buff is a 1913 type I that I can barely make out and two of the V nicks were 1893 and 1896. Couldn't make out MM's on any. You have to look real close to see the dates but their there. At least I can use them to fill holes until I can get some better examples. This thread has been great!

Yeah, the hydrogen peroxide DEFINITELY speeds things along. Usually between 4-8 hours, sometimes longer for the really slick ones, for the date to appear.

I don't know how I haven't stumbled across this thread before. Just wanted to say that this is awesome, and I hope you can find the rest of the nickels at a good price!

Thanks! I hope so as well! I just bought the 26-S off ebay for 4.98, so I will add that one to the list as well once I have it in hand and can confirm it. I might be about to pull the trigger on a 1915 as well. That would leave me with just 4 to go!

So I should be getting two new ebay acquisitions in the mail soon, 1915 and 1926-s. Got them both under the budget I had for them. I think I got better deals on them because the pictures weren't the best, so I want to see them in hand before putting them on the list. There is also a 24-d that I may get soon. That would leave just 15-s,21-s,and 31-s to finish my set. I am finding those difficult to get in my price range, but I have seen sold listings in that range, so I will continue to look. I can almost see the finish line now!

So, I tried adding peroxide to the frozen vinager on a supper slick one to day and it came to be an 1891 V nickel! Although I think the reverse was taken down to its core. Looks like copper showing through. I guess I have to check the ratio and the timeing more carefully. Its a hole filler for now anyway.
