While looking at several Kennedy half dollars, I stacked them and noticed that three of them had no reeding.

Considering that the Kennedy coins don't circulate very much, isn't it rather strange that the reeding has worn off?

Has anyone else noticed this?

First time I've seen it on Kennedy half dollars.

I never noticed any reeding missing on a Kennedy half. It is a little strange, since they don't circulate.

Your Kennedys probably saw life in a slot machine, getting chucked in the slot over and over again wearing down the reeding. I saved a couple from when I went to Las Vegas a few years ago. The coins had nice detail but were very baggy and the reeding was worn down. I have seen the same effect on Morgan and Peace dollars that were in service in Nevada casinos until the 1960s.
Rest in Peace

Slot machines? Makes a lot of sense to me!
Does everybody know why the reeding is put on coins in the first place? In the olden days, unscrupulous people would shave off a little bit of the edges of gold & silver coins, eventually building up a little pile of precious metal that the could then sell. The coins that had been shaved down would be passed on, possibly with nobody ever noticing the difference unless they weighed the coin. To stop the ploy, lettering or reeding was added to the rims of precious metal coins. There is no logical reason to keep putting them on current coins, except maybe to help people with poor eyesight, but the tradition continues...
