Hello all, new here. I have a question. Is there any more information about the "P" mintmark 2001 half dollars that anyone has found? I've done some searching about this 2001 "P" half dollar (in these forums too) I got as change at a ferry terminal near Seattle that I've had for almost a year now and am seeing that USMint is releasing some fresh-from the vault examples: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...20&langId=-1Then I found this information: http://www.coinresource.com/pr_mint...ves_2001.htmDid some of the 2001 "P" mintmarks come out in, possibly, uncirculated set or something of that type? It seems I have quite an unusual coin here. Thanks!

Hi Welcome to the forum There were no 2001-P Kennedy half dollars released into circulation ,, they were however included in the Uncirculated mint sets and souvenir sets. apparently someone has broken up a mint set and spent some of the coins . Not really highly unusual ,,in all reality ,,occasionally even a proof coin turns up in circulation . Metalman

From what I've heard, everything from the Mint is a sold out limmited edition and everything is sold out in the year that it is produced. I think that he is trying to ask, "Why is the U.S. Mint selling 2001 Kennedy Halfs in 2007?"

He said He got it in change from a ferry terminal .
the other info (at least how I took it ) was info that was found searching for info on the 2001-P .
The Half Dollars are produced yearly ,,they just are not released into general circulation ,but are available from the mint ,, and are part of the mint sets .
Sorry if I was confused

Usually when you find a non released for circulation coin in circulation it is due to a coin collection theft, inherited coins with no idea what to do with them. Theft coins usually just go into circulation.

I Have dumped many a 2001 Kennedy into circulation. I bought several bags from the Mint during the initial offering in 2001. The mint stopped selling the bags and rolls at the end of 2001. I sold a couple at a significant profit. One guy on ebay was buying bags regularly at $250 plus. Then in 2004 the Mint decided to make the remaining stock pile available for sale and the bottom dropped out of the market. I pulled all the higher grade ones out most of the remaining bags a have since spent most of the rest of them. I still have 2 bags left just in case the price goes up again.
