I have a coin that I badly need to get TPGed, I signed up with PCGS a while ago but what's been holding me back is with it's rarity I do NOT want to send it through the mail, (I've dealt with shipping insurance claims before and know they never pay out, even if they did it belonged to my grandfather so it has more value to me than that.)
I saw in another thread about PCGS "Walkthroughs" at coin shows, is this a better way to go? Is it really that big a risk in sending it through the mail? I certainly wouldn't send a box full of cash through the mail, that's kind of how I feel here.

They only do walk-throughs at MAJOR coin shows where they bring and setup the equipment nearby. Portland does not qualify: Quote: Comments: PCGS will be available for submissions only (no on-site grading). PCGS Representatives will be able to answer questions, accept submissions (excluding Bulk), and provide specific hours for submission cutoff times. For further details, please check with a PCGS Representative at the booth. See here: http://www.pcgs.com/Shows/

Strauss I didn't see your reply first, I doubt the Carolina Coin and Stamp Show would be a major show, does anyone know of any shows they would have that in/near NC?

Is this about the 1886 Morgan? If so, go see Ash Ashmore in Goldsboro. His website is his last name, .com. He is as good as they get with Morgans, he'll tell you on the spot if it's a Proof and will know exactly what to do about it. Not to mention he'd probably really like to see it.

Dave, yes it is and great advice! I drive through Goldsboro all the time for business so I'll try to bring it along next time. Honestly I'm surprised someone remembered that post it's been a while.

I didn't remember it - I searched your previous posts to see if you'd already posted the coin in question. From what I see in that thread, yeah, it could very well be a Proof and Ash is one of maybe a half-dozen guys in the country whom I trust implicitly with any Morgan attribution. It's worth pursuing.

for those of you curious as to the coin in questions appearance, its just stunning and if they were mine I would consider sending in the 1880s as well https://goccf.com/t/183878

Pics aren't enough to be sure but the 1880 looks circulated to me. A poorly-struck 1880-S is kind of a rarity and the obverse doesn't look great.

You can do a couple of things: 1). Find a local dealer that does PCGS and NGC submissions and let him send them in for you, or 2) submit the coins yourself by sending them Registered Mail for the full value to the grading service of your choice.
Everything you do has risk to it. From possibly slipping in the shower to getting t-boned at an intersection by some idiot texting.... bad things happen everyday.
I have been shipping coins and paper money back and forth by Registered Mail here in the US for 40 years and have NEVER had a Registered package get lost, stolen or tampered with. Yeah, they may take a few days longer to get delivered but they always have showed up.

Really nice coin. Too bad they are kind of scarce up here. I would use registered mail as well.

It would be a bit of a drive but the Whitman show in Baltimore at the end of the month will have both PCGS and NGC present.

Quote: Is it really that big a risk in sending it through the mail? Quote: Not if you use Registered Mail. Is it a BIG risk? No. But, if you have ever had to deal with USPS on an insurance claim you would understand his hesitation. Also, it has irreplacable family and sentimental value.

SilverBeagle regularly drives past one of the best Morgan guys in the country. Ash is a former SSDC President and the guy who assembled the Grading Set of Hotlips Morgans. This is about the easiest problem we've ever had to solve here.
