Folks - I found this CRH this past weekend. Pretty worn, but it's an S mint so I'm hoping folks with experience might see more than I'm seeing. It's worth a shot...

Looking at the ribbon you can rule out 20, 21, and 24 because those have wavy ribbons and not straight. Can also rule out 1913 type 1, obviously. Past that, I think the only way you are getting the date off of this one is vinegar or nic-a-date. Otherwise, I don't think you will ever know. I say you might as well, because dateless buffs are barely worth anything anyway, and even an acid dated coin like a 1913-s T2 would net you quite a profit on ebay.

I'm going to go with 1923-S. The last digit can partially be seen and it seems too close to the ribbon to be a 1913. The digit to the left looks like it could be a 2.

Carnold - thought of you when I got into this box; 18 Buffalos were in it. I did the 50/50 treatment on a dateless specimen to reveal 1915. It's soaking yet to see if I can lift a mintmark if it's there. Thank you for the detailed explanation regarding ribbons, etc. I've a lot to learn when it comes to Buffalos.

Coinsearcher - in hand, that's what I was making out. I figured it was either the 13 or 23 given the limited options. But hoping someone sees a 1 in front of it.

83, I was kinda thinking that looked like a 3 as well, but not sure if my mind was playing tricks on me. I compared it to a 23 I have, and it definitely looks like it could be. I still say there is not enough there to be 100% though. To me, it looks like the spot that could be a 3 is just at too funky of an angle, like it's too far tilted to the left.

And 18 buffalo box? WOW. I am a bank teller and I crack open nickel rolls when it's slow sometimes, and I've never pulled a single one that way. I would faint if I got a box like that.

After looking at the blown up image and comparing it to a coin in hand, I'd have to agree that that really does look like a 3. I don't see any way of making out the digit before, though. Just based on the odds given rarity, I would say you probably do have a 23-S.

23-S most likely based on the shape of the "3".

The "3" on 1913 coins is a different shape than the "3" on 1923 coins. The most notable difference is the left most points of the "3" line up evenly on the 1913 coins while on 1923 coins the top and center left points of the "3" are offset.

Folks - I'm sitting here with a big grin delighted by the wealth of experience and knowledge brought to this thread! The collaborating and the use of comparative samples to solve the riddle - just terrific!!

Carnold - it was an amazing box. I'm tallying all the finds for an update in the CRH forum. Many nice Jeffersons in that box. I kept about 300 nickels to sort through and look for varieties. But I knew I was into something when I saw this...
