First off, this coin was purchased in the late 1970's and I gave it to my father. It has sat in a metal box along with the other 44 Morgan dollars in square dollar tubes I gave him back then. All except two are XF/AU. My dad died in 2011 and now my mother has possession of the dollars. I recently have been going through them to see if any might have some value as a VAM.

When I got to this coinLaminated-1921-Morgan-Dollar
The first thing that caught my eye was a defect on the left side which is clearly a planchet lamination.

Upon further inspection I noticed a raised line which did not look like a scratch extending in from the rim to the first star on the left. The next picture clearly shows it is a die gouge.

Here is a link to an enlarged image of the obverse.

All but three of the 45 Morgan dollars are pre 1921.

I have two questions, first would this dollar be worth sending in to get encapsulated with an error label for the lamination? Second, is there any other 1921 Philadelphia Mint Morgans known with this die gouge?

It is not pretty and has not been cleaned but it is an interesting piece.

Putting it up on VAMworld is getting it in front of the right group of eyes along with SsuperDdave on this site. It may be helpful to determine if it's a 16 or 17 berry reverse to narrow down the search, however.

I am leaning toward the line from the star being a second planchet defect or maybe even a strip struck onto the coin. As a crack, I don't think there's a similar one known. The overwhelming majority of D2 VAMs are defined by the reverse, and I don't see anything on the obverse to help me in one direction or another.

It's a fascinating coin, and I'm hardly done thinking about it.

The lamination is not worth slabbing.

I would be willing to send it to you for closer examination.

I was not sure if it was or not. I figured I would ask and someone more knowledgeable in this sort thing relating to Morgan dollars would chime in.
