Hello Everyone, My name is Adam and I am brand new to the hobby. I work for a hobby store who's owner also buys coins, silver and gold in addition to buying and selling old and new trains. I learned about Junk silver there and one day I started to look through my spare change and found a War Nickel (1944). That got me started looking through the rest of my change and doing some research on what to look for. Right now I've just been going through regular, circulated coinage. I have bought silver in the past as an investment and still have some Canadian Silver Maple Leafs left (Hate the Milk Spots though). What I'd like to do is start becoming a real collector. I would like to start small and work my way up. Obviously sifting through my spare change is the cheapest way to find something but I want to get to the next step. I don't know where to start though. Any advice for a new collector? Thanks in advance! -Adam

to the forum! It seems as if you've got a real desire to learn. That is awesome! This forum has an incredible amount of knowledge, and no question is too small or insignificant. An inexpensive way to start is by roll hunting. This is done by buying boxes of coins from banks and looking through them to fill folders or albums and also for errors and varieties. You only pay for the few that you'll take out. Good luck!

Thank you for the warm welcome.
I've heard of buying boxes from the bank. Thank you for confirming it.
I will try to pick up my first box this weekend. I guess pennies are the best one to start with since it's only $25.
Thanks again The Silver Searcher

Welcome , your on the right forum for just starting out as a coin collector. tons of information here. yes the cheapest way to get started would be CRH. also if there are any local coin shows near you, sometimes you can get good deals at these shows. where abouts from new York are you ?

to CCF Adam. All have given you good advice especially Silver Searcher but let me add some of my own. Build up your Numismatic Library especially since you are probably starting with CRH. A reasonably priced book is "Strike It Rich with pocket change" 4th edition by Ken Potter and Dr. Brian Allen....Error Coins Bring Big Money. That is a reasonably priced book and I highly recommend it.

Thanks, BadToTheBone, I'll make sure that's the next book I get.
T-Bop I'm in Nassau County, a small town called East Rockaway around Lynbrook and Oceanside.
Thank you all again for the welcome!

Welcome Adam,
If you are going to start with pennies I recommend following these steps.
1. Go to Barnes and Noble and pick up Strike it Rich with pocket change by Ken Potter and Dr. Brian Allen
2. Buy a very nicely made eye loupe (1 time cost and very worth it) I have a Bausch and Lomb hastings triplet 10x (this will pick up most of what you are looking for) (hastings triplet is the manufacturing process)
2a. You don't want to go way up in magnification 20x 30x if you can't see it with the naked eye or with a 10x loupe then its not worth much
2b. you might want a 14x for mint marks
3. Start by pulling these dates for pennies:
1959-D, 1960-D, 1961-D, 1962, 1963-D, 1964, 1968-D, 1969-S, 1969-D, 1970-D, 1970-S, 1971, 1971-D, 1972, 1972-D, 1972-S, 1974, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1983-D TO 1989-D, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1992-D, 1993-D, 1994, 1995, 1995-D, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2004-D, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010
Good luck and happy searching!
