Any Flying Eagle guys onboard? Question? According to Red Book '58 8/7 cent can be identified by a "small dot" in field over first 8...first..does this occur on the LL or SL coin?..second..is dot visible with naked eye or can it only be found with magnification?..third..where in the field above first 8 should one look?....finally...as the die was supposedly ground "clean" is there a visible distortion in the second 8 compared to a normal coin?...TIA

Hi, pennypincher!

While not a FE collector, I can answer your question about the dot.
It IS visible to the naked eye, and it's over the first 8 about halfway between the 8 and the eagle.
Hopefully someone else can answer your other questions.

Steve

Hello Pennypincher,
I think you are referring to the 1858 8/7 Large Letter Snow-1, it has the die chip left over from a 1 digit visible above the first eight in the date, no distortion in the second 8 itself, but a well pronounced top of a 7 is visible to the right top of the second 8 in the date in die stage A, in die stage b the seven is less pronounced. The pic Firecom911 posted is of the die stage B, a real nice coin by the way.
