This is how many emails I have in my in-box as of this evening. Two weeks ago I only had 600. Sometimes I wonder how I get through so much email without blowing my computer to smitherines--wires popping, sparks shooting out of the holes. I have somehow learned to type over 80 words per minute using three fingers and staring at the keyboard, and I rarely have a word out of place or spelled wrong. Well, as of this evening we broke through having 100 volunteers to sort through $50 in cents to see what dates are in there. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger and tell everyone to go ahead and start sorting. I have the site completed, and I'm ready for the trampling I will get in my email when people start finding oddities in their coins, finding rarities in their coins, or don't know how to sort 1974 cents. I think I'm ready for it. Fact is, nothing this big has ever been attempted, much less pulled off. To all here who have already volunteered, you're a part of the biggest by volume coin study in history to my knowledge - and that of the ANA, Numismatic News, CONECA, and all the other organizations I have managed to get on my side with this. Just a day in my wonderful numismatic life. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I've never been a big cents fan so this should be interesting to see what I get. Part of me wants to have every single date, MM, and variety present. But the lazy side of me hopes I get a box of 2007P I'll try to keep the e-mailing down to 5 a day for ya

What kind of tolerances are you planing on having? If I had to guess, 10-15% will say they are going to count but never send in anything. I would also guess 10% +/- will make up numbers just to get them turned in. Then there is the 50% chance of errors on the large and small dates when people just guess. I hope my guess' are less, I am looking forward to counting my cents and then checking for varieties. An easy one to include in the count would be Wide AM on the 1998-2000 cents.

Tolerances are wide, actually. There's no way I can ascertain that any of the people counting can actually tell the difference between the large and small date coins....the zinc from the brass. I just have to hope that the number than can and do outweigh the number that can't or don't. as for those who fudge the numbers just to get them in - I figure that might happen to some degree, but then again, how am I to know for sure? I just have to hope that everyone who has volunteered does so knowing what they are getting into and either pulls their count or bows out.

I would say that the only "real" way to do a controlled(accurate)study would have people mail the cents to one central location and have them counted in a controlled atmosphere. Do you think that after the study is done prices for some of the varieties will change? I do hope you get a grant awarded to you for this, you then can reimburse yourself for some of the cost to run this study.

If you get to needing help fielding unusual questions, I can offer assistance there. That, my friend would be up to you:-)but if the volume of emails gets crazy, I am here.
I usually get 200 a day that really need answers between the parrot questions and the coin questions:-) but I can squeeze in a few more:-) I only do 50 words a minute though, two fingers:-)

Coppercoins, I'm going to try to get my parents to let me attend the 2008 Summer Seminar... If I'm allowed I will be taking your Lincoln Cent class.

Umm....my Lincoln Cent class? Am I teaching a Lincoln Cent class? Far as I knew I was teaching digital photography one week, then co-teaching a die variety attribution class the other week. Hey...I'd rather teach Lincoln cents. Get enough people together and we can do that instead. They'll do anything with at least eight to take it.
