Hi All

First time poster and completely new to all this. I came across this Liberty Head $20 gold coin recently while going through some family heirlooms and have been trying to find out more about it. To my untrained eye, it looks to be in quite good condition for its age, although there are a few nicks and hairline scratches, and the Liberty side seems slightly less defined than others I've looked at online.

I'd be grateful if anyone could advise whether it's possibly anything special and is worth getting professionally graded.

Thanks

The coin looks like it has been abrasively cleaned, so probably not a good candidate for grading. Still, it contains almost an ounce of gold, so it is a great heirloom. Congrats.

AU Details, not that I know much on these, just taking a stab. Looks to be wire brushed in that last photo. Still a great coin! Can't say I've ever owned a double eagle. At least not yet...

Welcome to Coin Community, WinstonSmith. With a mintage over a million, this isn't a particularly rare issue, so its' value won't greatly exceed melt. The obverse has undoubtedly been polished. As easy as gold scratches, the lines we see here which are normally caused by a brush could have been caused by cloth. Either way, that destroyed any additional numismatic value to the coin.

It's a shame. Gold does not corrode and chances are whatever they wanted to remove would have rinsed off. They probably just wanted to "make it shine."

Thanks for the responses guys. The flash in the last photo makes it appear worse than it does under natural light, but even so, it's clearly been rubbed or wiped with something in the past, which as noted, is a shame. Still, even in the AU range it would appear to be worth around £900/$1400, which isn't bad for something we found lurking in a cellar!
