This one was a long time coming. I used to search endlessly for this coin but gave up about a year ago. For some reason I opened the listing and flipped to the reverse and poof! By the way, I strained an eyeball trying to see the remnants of the overdate and still wonder if its there.
Unfortunately it suffered the scrubbing practice of the 60's and 70's on the PL surfaces. Appears to be mid AU range and why you would scrub it is beyond me. They are still out there so don't stop looking.

The ears have to be there, nlp. The reverse is paired with a second obverse with no distinguishing features; it's known but not numbered yet. If you can be sure of the overdate one way or another (your date looks a little Far; check behind me) and it's not V8, this is one to study very closely to nail down die markers and get that other one designated. It'll be a Discovery Coin.

Noel, I can't see any ears, do you have the coin in hand?

On my PC monitor I like your date better - VAMworld is tough to navigate on Mobile and even though my phone has a *huge* screen it's not the same. What we need are one of each obverse to compare.

It's not a VAM 8 "ears". Here's a close-up of the second eight on an example I found. The ears are distinct in the close-up.

Yes, it looks like its lumped in with the Vam-1's. I don't know if anyone ever chased that die pairing any farther. Since the obverse doesn't have any stand out pups it stopped at the Vam-1 corral. nlp

Thanks for the link. I just read it and looked over the coin again. The only thing I see that sticks out is an ear gouge similar to the VAM 8 but not the same. Enough to confuse you but the angle isn't right.

Yeah, this is the "VAM-1" obverse. There isn't a ton of institutional will in the VAMming world to clean up these minor loose ends - the job is simply too big.
