Hello from Canada! (Toronto). I have a couple of old coins that have been lying around, such as what appears to be a ~100 year old Canadian Quarter Dollar (the reverse is so worn the date is fully smoothed away) and a handful of foreign coins from here and there...

I've always had an appreciation for the alchemy, metallurgy & other technologies and arts that go into the stamping of a coin.

I found this forum quite by accident while doing the research to determine that my heavily worn coin was more than double my own age, and have been busy reading new and old threads alike. (Thanks to all present and former contributors!)

My eyesight has been going south rapidly this past year, but I'm planning to get to the next coin show here in the city to oggle all that is there, regardless; frankly I had no idea the commemorative (and NCLT) arena was so large... it's a bit overwhelming.

Hello

Joined some days ago. From Norway. I started collecting coins when I was just about 6 years old. I got a small box with some coins from my mother, and I still know some of my coins from that origin even if I am now 53.
The coin hobby was put away for many years, but I have now been quite active for the last 3-4 years. My area of interest is quite general covering the whole world, and especially very old coins. Favorite 14th to 16th century. I am very interested in history, and think coins are interesting in that respect. The coins does not need to be expensive and rare. If they're old it's ok for me. ahh.. one area of modern coins. Norwegian 5-Ore 1875-1972.

I'm from Como, Italy, very close to the Swiss border. I started collecting coins when I was very young, about 10 y.o. At that time there was still the lira, so I've been able to put togheter an almost complete set of coins from the circulation, dating back to the early 1950s. I later purchased most of the missing coins and move my interest on the Kingdom of Italy coins (1861-1943; especially Vittorio Emanuele III's reign, 1901-43) which is my current area of interest.
Anyway I like to keep every foreign coin that catch my eye over a moment. I tried to start collecting US coins but I've found they're just too expensive (even a common Zincoln is rare to find under EUR 0.50 here, and very likely you'll get a circulated specimen); the only set I've assembled with continuity being that of Roosevelt dimes because I like the design and sometimes dealers didn't bother about silver, mixing pre-1964 issues with common world coins that sells for little.

My first US coin, however, was an 1882-O Morgan dollar, purchased about 12 years ago from a dealer in my hometown, because I got exited with large silver coins back then, in my childhood. I can recall paying EUR 20 for it.
I'm also working on sets of Austrian (from 1892), French (from 1960) and Spanish (from 1936) pre-euro circulating issues. I sometimes keep Swiss coins (very common here), just for the fun of it, for that I guess you cannot call it a 'collection'. I save the silvers (pre-1968) and later spend the remaining coins.
