I dumped out my pocket coins out on the scanner this AM. It's not a pretty scan, but these are not pretty coins....

Whats-In-My-Pocket-This-Am

In summary, a 1793 French sol aux balances (which keeps adding grime to the other coins), an 1856-s half eagle, a badly split 1671 4 reales potosi cob, 2 - undated 1/2 real potosi cobs ca 1700-1760, an unknown date and mint 1 real cob, a 1785 Lima 2 reales, an 1820 shilling, and a ca 1550-1600 hammered Elizabeth I shilling (only recognizable by the neck ruff - this was a $12 coin). A mess of cheap little coins which have no chance of ever slabbing....

Most people I know carry current coins around in their pockets. Why do you have these in your pocket?

Slabs or not, please do get a hold of me via email and feel free to send them to my house. Just kidding of course but they really are something just to be carrying around.

Chrycopaul, sad to say I don't carry very many current coins in my pocket. I buy everything with bills, checks and credit cards; and what little change I get goes into a box, which goes to the bank to cash in every couple months. The last real use I had for coins was on the tollway, but that's all electronic now.

As far as why I carry the old coins - they may not be spendable or valuable, but at least they're in motion again, jingling around like coins are supposed to (especially that Peruvian 2 reales - it rings like a bell). I get more enjoyment carrying them around than having them in an album or a box. I'd like to be carrying a F+ 1861-S quarter or even an AG 1916-S half, but I can't without wrecking the patina.

And if I lose one, I know where I can get more. The only one that would hurt would be the half eagle.
