My co-worker is looking to sell some of his coin collection due to a financial situation, but he is unsure what this is. He has it marked 1890, because he found it in a book at one point in time. The pictures also show it as being copper colored, but it is actually bright silver. Can any identify it and give me some more information? Thanks.

Well I'm gonna have to say more than likely its a copy of a pattern of the China Kwangtung Province. The patterns were made of either copper or brass

Scoutjim had a very similar fake Chinese dollar in this thread (the coin numbered 1). The bottom line of script in the top picture gives the alleged weight of the coin: "7 mace 2 candareens", which is the weight of a dollar. Weigh it and it'll probably come up a lot lighter than 27.4 grams. Scoutjim's specimens were way underweight.

I have a digital scale for shipping, and it comes up at 22 grams. Pictures attached, along with a pic of the edge of the coin. Do you think it is fake?

Answered in other forums, it's very likely to be a counterfeit.

Yep, 22 grams is way too lightweight.

It's a dud.

I have about 100 of these, with about 10 different designs. It sickened me to find out they were all fake. I bought a digital scale, for this reason only, but the easier way is to see if they are Magnetic. If so, they are fake.

Hi all - I agree totally that at 22 grams you have a counterfeit.

These trade for under $3 in the Chinese markets where they are openly sold in baskets. A friend of mine just returned from Hong Kong where he reported there was a nearly endless number of designs available including many US dollar coins all at under $5 if you talk them down. He also indicated that they start out trying to palm them off as real but come down fast when you indicate you know exactly what they are.

This one is a fake. I have seen before some grade A high quality fakes from China, with lots of details on the dragon scales and they were silver electroplated. Without experience and a digital scale those would be difficult to spot.
