What in the world is this? And how would something like this happen? If it is even real, that is.

Grease filled die. Legitimate error.

Good to know. Does an error like this make it valuable at all?

Not a whole heck of a lot but a little.
This is one of the more common "struck thru" errors. Some can be very dramatic such as "struck through cloth" or "struck through retained wire" errors.
Values can skyrocket on some of these.

Thanks for the info, I still have a lot to learn. What would a struck through cloth or retained wire even look like? And how would cloth even get a chance to interfere in the first place?

Cloth and wire brushes are used to wipe down and clean minting equipment.
Once in a great while, a piece of cloth or wire will come between the planchet and the die and from the incredible pressure coming down to mint the coin, will leave that impression on the coins surface or, imbed a wire.

Here is a struck through cloth error.

You could always list is on ebay as " Lincoln Cent 1 AD: A Coin From The Birth Year Of Christ" or the likes and see what it'll go for. ;-)

I'm obviously kidding.

But more seriously, aye that's a pretty striking (no pun intended) struck-thru-grease. Certainly by all metrics a keeper.
